You Don't Need a Second System. You Need One That Talks to the First.
Here is the objection I hear most about ISO 42001: "We already have ISO 9001 for quality. We have 27001 for security. We cannot run a third management system."
Good news. You do not have to.
ISO 42001 was built on the same skeleton as the other ISO management standards: same clause structure, same Plan-Do-Check-Act heartbeat, same ideas about leadership, risk, and improvement. That is deliberate. It means you can integrate AI governance into the systems you already run instead of building a parallel universe.
In plain English: you already have a management review meeting. Add AI to the agenda. You already have an internal audit program. Add AI controls to its scope. You already have a risk register. Add AI risks to it. You already train staff. Add AI literacy to the training.
One system, wider scope. Not three systems competing for attention.
This is also how small teams survive governance. Nobody has time for three separate bureaucracies. But almost everyone can stretch one good system a little further.
If your house is already in order, ISO 42001 is an extension, not a renovation. Build on what works.
