What Grants Compliance Taught Me About AI Documentation
In my federal grants compliance days, I learned one lesson that never expired: the team with the best documentation wins every audit.
It didn't matter who worked hardest. When the reviewers arrived, they didn't ask about effort. They asked for records. Who was eligible? Show me. How were funds tracked? Show me. What happened when something went wrong? Show me the log.
AI governance runs on the same fuel. The EU AI Act's documentation duties, training data summaries, decision logs, testing records, are the grant reports of the AI world. Nobody loves writing them. Everybody loves having them when questions come.
Documentation is just respect for the future. You're writing down today what someone will need to trust tomorrow.
