What Goes Into the AI Stays in the AI
Quick rule for your whole team, and it fits on a sticky note: what goes into the AI stays in the AI.
When you paste customer names, financial details, employee records, or anything you'd be embarrassed to see on a billboard into an AI tool, you've shared it — with the tool provider, and possibly with whoever trains their next model on user data. Free tools especially have to make money somehow, and your inputs are the obvious candidate.
So make it a habit, not a hope. Before anyone on your team pastes something into an AI tool, they ask: would I be comfortable if this were public? A customer list with phone numbers — no. A draft of a generic marketing email — fine. A client's contract terms — absolutely not.
This isn't about fear. It's about the same instinct that keeps you from forwarding a client's email to the wrong person. AI tools just make the forwarding invisible, which is why the habit has to be deliberate.
Sticky note on every monitor: what goes into the AI stays in the AI. In privacy terms, that's data governance — deciding what information goes where, on purpose, before something goes wrong.
