The Quiet Cost of Free AI Tools
Free AI tools aren't free. You just pay in a different currency: your data, your team's habits, and your future options.
The data part is straightforward — when you're not paying, your inputs are often the product. That customer list you pasted, those internal notes you summarized: assume they taught the vendor something. Sometimes that's fine. Often you didn't think about it, which is the problem.
The habits part is sneakier. Your team builds workflows around a free tool, stores work in it, learns its quirks. Then the pricing changes, the limits tighten, or the tool shuts down — and migrating feels impossible. The free tool wasn't free; it was a loan with surprise terms.
None of this means never use free tools. It means count the real cost before you commit: what data goes in, how hard is it to leave, and what happens to your work if the tool disappears? If the answers are comfortable, enjoy the free tier. If they're not, the paid plan — or a different tool — is cheaper than the surprise.
Free is a price, not a gift. Read the price tag.
