The Myth of the One-Time Audit
Myth: you get audited once, you pass, and you're compliant forever.
Nobody who has worked in federal grants believes this, because it was never true. The audit was a snapshot. What kept programs compliant was everything between audits — the monthly reconciliations, the quarterly reports, the monitoring visits, the habit of checking.
AI is walking straight into this myth. Teams run one bias test, or complete one risk assessment, frame the result like a diploma, and move on. Meanwhile the model keeps learning, the data keeps shifting, and the use cases keep multiplying.
Compliance was never a certificate. It was a rhythm.
If you want AI you can defend, build the rhythm: a regular cadence of checking outputs, reviewing who uses the system and how, and re-testing when anything meaningful changes. Monthly, quarterly — pick a beat and keep it.
The audit doesn't make you compliant. What you do after the audit does.
