Regulatory Sandboxes: Practice Fields for AI Rules

The EU AI Act includes something every teacher will recognize: a practice field.

They're called regulatory sandboxes. Teams can test AI systems in a controlled, supervised environment, with regulators watching, before the full rules apply. Mistakes made in the sandbox come with guidance instead of fines.

This is how learning actually works. You don't hand someone the final exam on day one. You give them practice reps with a coach nearby, room to get it wrong, and feedback that makes the next attempt better.

If you're building something innovative and the rules feel daunting, look into sandbox programs. They're the law's way of saying it would rather help you get it right than punish you for getting it wrong.
