The NIST AI Playbook's Fairness Lens, in Plain English
In January 2023, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology published the AI Risk Management Framework — a voluntary playbook for managing AI risks, fairness included. You don't need to read all hundred-plus pages. The fairness message fits in a paragraph.
NIST's core idea: treat fairness the way you'd treat any serious risk — govern it, map it, measure it, manage it. Govern: decide who owns fairness decisions. Map: figure out where bias could enter your system and who it could harm. Measure: test for it with real data. Manage: act on what you find and keep watching.
In plain English: fairness isn't a value you declare. It's a risk you manage, on a cycle, with owners and evidence.
What I like about the framework is its honesty: it doesn't promise bias-free AI. It promises a disciplined process for finding and reducing bias — which is the only honest promise anyone can make.
If your team does nothing else, adopt the rhythm: govern, map, measure, manage. Run it before launch and on a schedule after. That's the whole playbook, and it works.
