Management Review: The Meeting Where AI Gets Honest
Every management system has a meeting that matters more than the others. In ISO 42001, it is the management review: leadership sits down, looks at the evidence, and decides what changes.
In plain English, it is the meeting where AI gets honest.
The agenda writes itself. How are our AI systems performing? What did monitoring and audits find? What changed — new risks, new regulations, new uses? Are our objectives on track? What needs more resources, and what needs to stop?
Here is what separates a real review from theater. Theater reviews the slides. Real reviews interrogate them. Theater ends with "great job, team." Real reviews end with decisions: this control gets fixed by June, that use case gets paused until the bias review completes, this budget gets approved.
And the review must be led by the people with authority to act on it. A management review without management is a book club.
Hold it on a schedule — at least annually, more often if your AI footprint is growing fast. Bring evidence, not vibes. Leave with decisions, not minutes.
One honest meeting, regularly held, will do more for your AI governance than a shelf of policies.
