Internal Audit: Check Your Own Homework First
Nobody loves being audited. But do you know what is worse than an audit? A surprise.
ISO 42001 requires internal audits: regular, independent checks of whether your AI management system actually works the way you say it does. In plain English, check your own homework before anyone else checks it for you.
In my federal grants compliance days, the organizations that sailed through external audits had one habit in common: they audited themselves first, honestly, and fixed what they found. The ones that scrambled were not worse organizations. They were just unpracticed at looking in the mirror.
An internal AI audit asks simple questions. Are we following our own AI policy? Do the controls we designed actually operate? Are the risk assessments current? Is the documentation real? The auditor should be independent enough to say uncomfortable things — which is why "audit yourself" still needs structure, not just good intentions.
The goal is not a perfect score. The goal is finding the gaps while they are small and cheap, instead of discovering them during a certification audit, a customer questionnaire, or a regulatory inquiry.
Check your own homework. Grade honestly. Fix fast. Repeat.
