Fairness Testing on a Small-Business Budget
Small businesses often assume AI fairness testing is a big-company luxury — dedicated teams, expensive toolkits, research budgets. It isn't. The checks that catch the most problems are the cheapest ones.
Start with a spreadsheet, not software. Take fifty past cases your AI tool would have decided. Run them through. Sort the outcomes by the groups that matter for your context — and just look. Do approval rates, flags, or rankings shift by group in ways you can't explain? That one exercise catches most real-world issues.
In plain English: fairness testing is mostly structured common sense, not advanced math.
Two more low-cost moves: ask your vendor what fairness testing they've done (in writing), and set a calendar reminder to re-run your spreadsheet check every quarter. Bias creeps in as data drifts; the re-check is the whole game.
You don't need to out-test the big labs. You need to know, with evidence, that your tool treats your actual customers fairly. A spreadsheet and an honest afternoon will get you there.
