Don't Automate Chaos

Here's the sentence I want every small business owner to tape above their desk: don't automate chaos.

Automation is a multiplier. It takes whatever you feed it and makes more of it, faster. Feed it a clean, working process and you get speed. Feed it a messy process and you get expensive, high-speed mess.

I learned this doing systems work — mapping business processes, building databases, writing requirements. Every time a team wanted software to fix a broken workflow, the software just broke faster and more impressively. The fix was never the tool. It was sitting down, mapping the steps on paper, and agreeing on how the work should actually flow. Then the tool helped.

So before you automate anything, ask one question: if a new employee followed this process exactly as written, would it work? If the answer is no, you don't have an automation problem. You have a process problem. Fix that first, and it's free.

Don't automate chaos. Organize first, then automate.
