Don't Automate a Biased Process
Here's the sentence I want every team to hear before they buy AI: don't automate a biased process.
AI doesn't fix unfairness in your workflow — it industrializes it. A screening process with a quiet bias against certain applicants becomes, with AI, a screening process that applies that bias to ten thousand applicants before lunch, with a confidence score attached. The unfairness didn't change. The scale and the disguise did.
In plain English: automation multiplies whatever it touches — including the parts you should have fixed first.
So the order of operations matters. First, examine the process the AI will accelerate: who does it serve well, who does it miss, what would you change if a human did it carefully? Fix what you can. Then — only then — bring in the AI, with fairness testing on the new combined system.
Don't automate chaos. Automate the process you already trust, and verify it stays trustworthy at speed.
