Document Your Datasets Like You'd Document a Grant
In federal grants work, every dollar had a paper trail. What came in, where it went, who touched it, what it accomplished. Nobody thought this was bureaucracy. It was how you proved the money did what it was supposed to do.
Your AI training data deserves the same discipline.
For each dataset, write down: where it came from, what it contains, whose information is in it, who is allowed to use it, and when it was last checked. One page per dataset. Plain words.
Then, when someone asks — an auditor, a customer, a regulator, your future self — you can follow the trail. No scrambling. No shrugging.
Documentation feels slow until the day it saves you. Grants taught me that. AI is just the newest place it applies.
