Data Is the Fuel. Steward It Like It Matters.
Every AI conversation is secretly a data conversation. The model gets the headlines, but the data does the work — and the damage, when it is wrong.
ISO 42001 treats data stewardship as a governance duty, not an IT chore. In plain English: someone must be responsible for the quality, legality, and fairness of the data feeding your AI, across its whole life.
What does that mean day to day? Know where your training data came from and whether you had the right to use it. Check that it represents the people your AI will affect. Watch for drift — data goes stale, populations shift, and yesterday's representative dataset becomes today's blind spot. Protect it, because AI training data is a privacy incident waiting for a breach.
Here is the sentence I want every leader to internalize: your AI cannot be more responsible than your data. A fairness commitment on top of a biased dataset is a coat of paint on a cracked wall.
Stewardship is unglamorous. Nobody keynotes about data lineage. But every AI failure I have studied had a data story underneath it.
Tend the fuel, and the engine behaves. Neglect it, and no framework will save you.
