Context of the Organization: Start With Your Reality

Before ISO 42001 asks you to do anything about AI, it asks you to look around. This is Clause 4, "context of the organization," and it is the most skipped step in the whole standard.

In plain English, it asks: what is your reality? What does your organization do? Where does AI touch your work? What laws apply to you? What do your customers expect? What could go wrong, specifically for you?

A hospital using AI for scheduling lives in a different reality than a marketing agency using AI for ad copy. Same standard, completely different risks, completely different controls. The standard knows this. That is why it starts with context instead of a one-size-fits-all checklist.

Here is how to do it without overthinking. Get the right people in a room for one hour. List where AI is used or planned. List what could go wrong in each spot. List the rules and expectations that apply. Write it down. That is your context.

Everything else in the management system hangs on this step. Your risks, your objectives, your controls — all of it should trace back to your actual situation, not a generic template.

Start with your reality. The standard will meet you there.
