An Audit Trail Is an Audit Trail
In my federal grants compliance days, I lived by one rule: every dollar had to be traceable. Who spent it, on what, when, and who approved it. No receipt, no story. It didn't matter how good the program was — if the money couldn't be traced, the money didn't count.
Then I started working in AI governance, and I had the strangest feeling of déjà vu. Because an AI system needs the exact same thing. Not for dollars — for decisions. Which data went in? Which version of the model made the call? Who approved putting it in front of customers? When it made a mistake, what did you change?
An audit trail is an audit trail. The auditors change, the subject changes, but the discipline is identical: write it down as it happens, or lose the ability to prove it later.
Here's what I tell every team: don't automate chaos. If your process is a mess of undocumented decisions and mystery data, bolting AI onto it doesn't modernize you — it just helps you make messes faster. Get the trail right first. The technology is the easy part.
